CONDITIONS TO EFFECTIVE COUNSELLING
Counselling is most effective when the counselees presenting concern is described in specific and concrete terms, a supportive relationship is formed between the counsellee and the counsellor, specific, objective and measurable goals are agreed on, a suitable method to reach these goals is found and counsellee commitment to resolving the presenting problem is demonstrated through the completion of homework assignments between sessions. Asking family members or partners to actively participate also contributes to effective counselling.
All information shared in the counselling session is held in strictest confidence in accordance with the high ethical standards of the counselling profession. In order to protect your confidentiality, your written approval is required prior to the release of any information either verbal or written, except in circumstances where the legal system requires disclosure.
